Wayne and Mira have a difficult decision in RFDS: do they carry on with life as normal or upend their world to become parents?

The couple had been happy to focus on their careers rather than start a family together, but Mira’s shock pregnancy has changed all that.

The decision lingers as Mira (Ash Ricardo) and Wayne (Rob Collins) are tasked with a difficult retrieval when they hit terrible turbulence mid-flight.

Meanwhile, Wayne’s son from a previous relationship, Darren (Thomas Weatherall), comes back to Broken Hill.

It’s not only feeling queasy that Mira’s concerned about.

He finds all is not the same on his return to the outback town. He’s been pursuing his dream to become an engineer, but while away, his girlfriend Taylor (Sofia Nolan) has been growing closer to the troubled Cameron (Jack Kenny) who was involved in the White Cliffs incident weeks earlier.

Taylor’s uncle, flight nurse Pete (Stephen Peacocke), is subject to an incident review over the events that left a patient unable to speak. And Pete is left reeling when it’s revealed who’s been asked to run the review: his ex, Eliza (Emma Hamilton).

In addition to the review, the incident has shaken Pete’s confidence and on patient retrievals.

Turbulence – and morning sickness – leave Mira unwell and Wayne worried.

Thomas, 23, tells TV WEEK the best thing about returning to Broken Hill to film season two of RFDS was sharing the base with real Royal Flying Doctor Service staff.

“It’s great that, between takes, you can talk to the people who actually work here or do the job,” he says. “And any questions you have, they’re more than willing to share their knowledge.

“It’s also nice to see how much it [RFDS] means to them, because when you make a show about this, our main goal is to just make it entertaining.”

“People who are directly affected by this [the work of the RFDS] or have a sincere relationship with it, when they love it [the show], that kind of feels a lot more gratifying than anyone else liking it. It’s a really great thing to know: they’re real-life superheroes,” he says.

Thomas says his character has grown a lot since season one.

“Darren is a young man now, who’s really found his calling in life,” he explains. “He has the opportunity to be his own man, and I think he really grabs it with both hands.”
