With the 2022 TV WEEK Logie Awards nearing closer, Australia’s television icons, reality stars and actors are eagerly counting down the days until they can strut their stuff on the red carpet again.
But no one is more excited than Matty ‘J’ Johnson.
Working as The Star’s official red carpet correspondent for the Logies, the former Bachelor will be up close and personal with the glitz and glam of television’s night of nights.
But it’s not just the typical Logies razzmatazz that the father-of-two is looking forward to.
Matty, who shares daughters Marlie-Mae, nearly three, and Lola, one, with fiancée Laura Byrne, tells TV WEEK that the Logies are a chance to take his dad cap off for a weekend.
“There’s a few things I’m excited about. Mainly having a couple of nights of uninterrupted sleep from the kids, sorry Laura,” he laughs.
“But the red carpet is always a huge highlight. Having the opportunity to work at it this year for The Star and chat to some of the biggest talent in the country is a pretty amazing experience.”
Matty is eager to see who walks away with the coveted Gold Logie for Most Popular Personality On Australian TV.
“I still can’t decide if it’s going to be Hamish [Blake] or Karl [Stefanovic],” he admits.
Landing the role of The Star’s Logies red carpet correspondent is a “pinch myself” for Matty, whose career has skyrocketed since finding fame on Georgia Love’s season of The Bachelorette back in 2016.
“Laura and I will be on the couch watching shows like MAFS and The Bachelor and think, “How crazy is it that we met on a TV show and now we’re engaged with two little girls?!”,” he says.
Despite his massive media success and regular appearances on The Living Room, Studio 10 and Have You Been Paying Attention?, Matty still struggles to see himself as a household name.
“I’m not sure how famous I can call myself though. I’m just a humble dad trying to make people laugh on Tiktok and Instagram, whilst embarrassing my family,” he says.
“It’s a rare occurrence but it’s extremely flattering when someone comes up to me in the street and says they enjoyed one of my videos.”
The 34-year-old’s most important role is, of course, being a doting dad to Marlie-Mae and Lola, who are hitting big milestones of their own.
“We’re trying to wean Lola off her night time bottle – she’s an absolute grizzle guts,” he laughs.
