Stan Australia has announced some exciting news that’s sure to brighten up your Wednesday morning, with the streaming service revealing Matt Okine’s The Other Guy will be returning for a second season.
Comedian and former Triple J breakfast host Matt co-wrote and stars in the series, which is based on his own experiences.
The first season of the comedy series follows radio host AJ, who has just found out that his girlfriend Liv (Valene Kane) has slept with his best friend and roomate.
With the help of his new housemate and old pal, Stevie (played by the ever-perfect Harriet Dyer), AJ navigates his way through the messy world of break-ups and newfound singledom in a dating world that can best be described as a fiery nightmare.
Things are certainly not helped by troubles at work, made worse by his online nemesis, internet troll Dog Murphy (Briggs).
Season two is set to pick up five months on from the end of season one.
“AJ Amon has lost everything – his house, his job, his best friend – and to make matters worse he’s just found out his ex-girlfriend is pregnant and it may or may not be his,” a statement from Stan reads of the new season.
“When a producer approaches AJ to make a TV show about his shitty life, he thinks he may finally have an opportunity to get back on top. But how do you make a show about your life without pissing off everyone in it? Will AJ use the show to get revenge on the people who wronged him or will reliving the past only keep him stuck there?”
Matt says it’s a dream come true to be making a second season of the hit show.
“To have the opportunity to make season two of The Other Guy is genuinely a dream come true, and I’m super proud that we get to keep making such a funny, unique show with the rawness and honesty that made the first season so well-loved,” he says.
“I’ve also been putting a lot of mental preparation into filming because it’s impossible to keep a straight face when you’re working with Harriet Dyer, who is hands-down one of the funniest people and performers I know. I can’t wait to show Australian and international audiences the next chapter of this story.”
The series is financed with support from Screen Australia and Create NSW, and is set to go back in to production in the coming months.
We can’t wait to see more from Matt and The Other Guys team. And, of course, we’re stoked to see more classic Stevie moments.
A renewed season of his series isn’t the only good news for Matt today, however, as the star also just shared that he’s about to become a father! The actor posted an exciting pregnancy announcement on Instagram this morning.
The heartwarming photo showed Matt and his pregnant partner, Belinda Rabe, at the beach. He simply captioned the post with a few pregnancy and baby emojis.
Congratulations to the happy couple!
Season one of The Other Guy is currently streaming on Stan Australia.
