Neighbours has something of a history for giving us some of the world’s most famous soap opera couples, and none more so than Neighbours alumni Madge and Harold Bishop.
The unforgettable characters who were played by Anne Charleston and Ian Smith, just shared a hilarious reunion on the UK morning show, Loose Women and we can’t get enough of their adorable banter.
Sex scandals, depression, financial nightmares, fraud: The Neighbours stars have lived through it all and have still maintained their sense of humour.
True to form, there were laughs galore, warm hugs and outrageous stories flying when the actors, who became household names on the Ten soap, sat together to answer questions about their past, present and future.
Reminiscing about their most memorable scenes, it’s impossible not to recall Harold disappearing off that rock and into the sea – and it turns out all was not what it seems.
“It was like a mill pond. All the crew were picking up rocks and throwing them in the water trying to make it look rough,” he confessed as the pair laughed.
And what about the pairs’ wedding day? Well, it turns out there was a little behind the scenes drama.
“The biggest drama was that I had psoriasis at the time so they couldn’t do the ring on the finger so we had to use the director’s hand – that wasn’t Harold’s hands!”
The actors also revealed it’s been a while since they spoke to co-star Kylie Minogue.
“You’ve got to be very fast to see Kylie these days,” Ian laughed.
And what about a return to Ramsay Street, could a comeback be on the cards?
“It’s manners to wait till you’re asked!” Ian said.
Ann laughed and added, “Well I can’t because they’ve buried me.”
It’s not the first time the pair have reunited, in 2017 Woman’s Day exclusively brought together Australia’s most iconic TV couples in the world’s sweetest photo shoot.
“We first met on the set of Bellbird in 1971 and – sharing many mutual friends – we often ran into one another at dinner parties,” Ian, 79, who is nothing like his stuffy TV alter ego Harold, revealed.
While Anne, 74, added, “We sort of stalked each other’s careers for years.”
But it was playing Harold and Madge that turned the busy stage and screen veterans into Ramsay Street royalty in more than 60 countries around the world.
Anne joined Neighbours in 1986 as Madge Mitchell – mother of Charlene (Kylie Minogue), with Ian coming on board a year later.
“It was great to finally be working so closely together, and we instantly gelled,” Ian remarked.
Ian and Anne have always remained dear friends.
