Could this be the end of Fargo?

There’s a lot to be said for quitting while you’re ahead.
Ewan McGregor in Fargo

The third season of Fargo, starring Ewan McGregor, may very well be the series’ last according to FX’s chief John Landgraf.

“There may never be another Fargo,” John told The Hollywood Reporter. “Unless Noah [Hawley, Fargo’s showrunner] has an idea for Fargo that he thinks he can make as good as the prior three.

“I think once people get to the end of this [season] they will find that it is thematically different. It’s really about the moment we live in now.”

The current season is set in 2010 and sees Ewan McGregor play twin brothers Emmit and Ray Stussy.

Emmit is a wealthy local real estate mogul, while younger brother Ray is a down-on-his-luck parole officer. Ray has a chip on his shoulder and blames Emmit for all his hardships.

He plans a petty theft to set things right, but being Fargo, things go very wrong.

“They were both great characters to bring to life,” Ewan revealed to TV WEEK. “To play and explore a character for more than 10 hours as opposed to a two-hour movie is very satisfying.”

Despite the current critical success, or perhaps because of is John Landgraf still isn’t convinced any further seasons could do the show justice.

On the other hand, executive producer John Cameron isn’t ready to give up on the story.

“I don’t think you ever run out of stories,” he told Digital Spy. “Certainly the Fargo universe seems like an infinite reservoir of interesting stories.”

There’s a lot to be said for quitting while you’re ahead, and Ewan’s stand out performance as Ray and Emmit Stussy this season could be a hard one to top.
