Ever since Downton Abbey‘s final episode aired in December 2015, fans have wanted a revival (because fans want a revival in everything these days). The period drama ran for six successful seasons and followed the Crawley family and their house staff from the years of 1912 to 1926.

Talk of a movie has been on the cards for some time, but in the meantime, let’s relive the craziest, saddest moments from the series.

Matthew dies:

Matthew (Dan Stevens) was on a high after his wife Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) had given birth to their child. The feeling was outlived when Matthew’s car to spin out of control, killing him instantly.

Anna is attacked: This was the most disturbing moment of the entire series and ripped our hearts out. Lord Gillingham’s valet Mr Green seemed friendly and charismatic, but he was hiding something sinister. During a performance in the house, Mr Green followed Anna (Joanne Froggatt) downstairs and viciously raped her. He later got his comeuppance when he was killed.

Sybil dies after giving birth:

We still haven’t forgiven the writers for this one. Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) was a sweet, kind-hearted soul and her love for Tom Branson (Allen Leech) was so pure. Just after giving birth to her daughter, Sybil suffered eclampsia and died. What made the situation worse was that Dr Clarkson diagnosed her with it before she went into labour, but Lord Grantham and another doctor didn’t believe him.

Bates and Anna go to jail:

Bates’ (Brendan Coyle) cruel estranged wife Vera was determined to see Bates suffer miserably. So when she died after being poisoned (it was later suspected she did it to herself), Bates was arrested for her murder and sentenced to life in prison. Anna fought to overturn his conviction and he was later released. The situation got reversed later on in the series when Anna was wrongly arrested for the death of her rapist, Mr Green. Those two never seem to escape drama!

Edith is ditched at the altar:

Lady Edith didn’t have the best of luck when it came to men. After falling in love with older man Sir Anthony Strallan, it seemed like Edith was finally going to get the happiness she deserved. Unfortunately, that pipe dream was derailed when he announced “I can’t do this” at the altar before running out of the church.

Robert spurts out blood:

It was clear from the episodes leading up to this moment that something was wrong with Lord Grantham’s (Hugh Bonneville) health but we didn’t realise it would reach this kind of climax. While having dinner with the family, Robert stood up, tried to speak and spurted blood out everywhere. A stomach ulcer had burst, but he soon regained full health.

Cora has a miscarriage: Cora’s (Elizabeth McGovern) lady’s maid Miss O’Brien (Siobhan Finnerman) did some shady things in the past, but this one is unforgiveable. After hearing a fake rumour that she could soon be without a job, she let a pregnant Cora slip while getting out of the bathtub. As a result, Cora lost the baby and O’Brien became the worst human ever.
