The moment was one of TV’s most explosive last year. At the conclusion of the 2018 season of Wentworth, we saw prison guards Will (Robbie Magasiva), Vera (Kate Atkinson) and Jake (Bernard Curry) dig up the crate in which Will had buried Joan “The Freak” Ferguson (Pamela Rabe) alive.
But even though the trio found a decomposing body inside, viewers couldn’t help but wonder: was it really The Freak? Bernard is here to set the record straight.
“The Freak isn’t coming back,” he tells TV WEEK. “How would she?”
While the plot for next season is under wraps, the actor hints it’ll be as gripping as ever – proven by the fact it’s been renewed for a further two seasons.
“It’s amazing,” Bernard, 44, says.
“We start shooting season eight in September, so it’s a while away, but I’m so excited to be part of it. I’ve signed the contract, so I’m in the show right until the end of season eight.”
When Bernard initially landed the role of Jake, he admits he had his doubts.
“I hadn’t seen any of the show,” he told TV WEEK previously. “I knew it was a reimagining of Prisoner. But, to be honest, I was prepared for it to be a bit sh-t.”
But now the star – who has previously appeared in Neighbours, Home And Away and Packed To The Rafters – says it’s been the highlight of his career.
“This show has been far and away the best I’ve ever done – and it’s been the most fun experience I’ve had professionally,” he says. “I’ve grown as an actor and as a person. I’d do this job for the rest of my life.”
Wentworth airs on Showcase on Foxtel.
