A few months ago it was announced that the next Time Lord taking over the Tardis in Doctor Who would be female, played by British actress Jodie Whitaker.

The news created quite a stir amongst fans, but it seems that Sherlock could soon follow suit if Benedict Cumberbatch has anything to do with it.

When asked if Sherlock should have a lady lead, Benedict was all for it!

“Why not?” he told RadioTimes. “I don’t care! Sherlockina. It’s coming to you soon.”

Jodie Whitaker will soon take over as the lead in Doctor Who.

The future of Sherlock is still up in the air, as no official word has been given whether a fifth series will be happening and Benedict is unable to give any answers.

When asked if he’d like to return to Sherlock, he replied with “maybe”.

And when asked if he’s spoken with Sherlock co-creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss about another season, another “maybe” was given.

Come on, Benedict, we need answers!

It turns out that all parties involved are keen for more episodes, but their various schedules are the hindrance.

“It’s not lack of will – it’s a nightmare to schedule,” Mark Gatiss told UKTV.

“It was very, very hard to schedule the last series, because of Martin [Freeman] and Benedict’s availability. And Steve’s and mine.

Sherlock stars Martin Freeman (left) and Benedict Cumberbatch.

“There is always that Fawlty Towers principle of, ‘Let’s just leave it’. We’ve had the keys to Baker Street for a while, but one of the wonderful things is that they’re always shared. They were shared while we were making it.

“There’s nothing wrong with saying, ‘That was our version, somebody out there go and do their version’.”

Fingers crossed a fifth season (with a female lead) hits our screens sometime soon!
