He’s going in to the finals with the fastest time on the clock, so does Ashlin Herbert have what it takes to win Australian Ninja Warrior?
TV WEEK caught up with the 23-year-old, who shares the reason behind his desire to win the series.
Why did you decided to apply for Ninja?
I decided to apply for Ninja Warrior because I’ve seen the American version and it looked like a fun, I’ve always loved obstacle courses!
How tough was it?
It was good fun. I really enjoyed it and met some amazing people.
What did your mum think when you told her you were going on the show? She must be proud?
It wasn’t a big surprise for mum, I’ve always been a little monkey, but on the other hand I’ve never been one to draw attention to myself so being on TV is pretty out there for me. I think she’s a very proud mother.
Describe your relationship with your mum. Are you guys super close?
Mum brought us up very well. My relationship with mum and my sister is very close. We are a pretty tight knit family.
Can you tell us a little bit about your dad. What do you remember about him?
Dad was a wonderful man, very caring. He was a top chef down here on the Mornington Peninsula, very renowned. I remember his amazing chocolate soufflés, the best I have ever had!
What do you think he would say if he could see you competing Ninja?
I think he would be very happy and proud!
How tough was it losing him?
Losing dad was hard on the whole family, because he went so young it just wasn’t fair to lose such a nice man.
Where does your love for adventure and the outdoors come from?
I have always loved the outdoors. I don’t really remember being inside as a kid. We have a bit of bush land behind our house where my sister and I would explore for hours on end when we were younger, still love it. Camping is the best!
Have you ever suffered any serious injuries from any of the activities you love doing?
I haven’t had any injuries yet. I just seem to bounce off things.
What do you hope to achieve on Ninja Warrior?
I hope to encourage people not to judge a book by it’s cover. You don’t have to be the biggest or the strongest to do well in Ninja Warrior!
