Due to the British line of succession, Queen Elizabeth’s death has marked the ascension for her son Charles, who now leaves behind his princely title and Duke of Cornwall title to become King.

Her Majesty passed away September 8, 2022 in her Scottish country residence at Balmoral surrounded by her children.

But various royal fans have questioned if the new King will change his name.

Charles had the option to reign under a different name other than his birth name, as various kings and queens did before him. However, Clarence House has confirmed he will be known as King Charles III.

Born, Charles Philip Arthur George, had the option to choose one of the names in his royal title.

Former royal butler Grant Harrold spoke to Studio 10 and clarified: “Normally royal children have two or three names. The reason is, if possibly that child was to become a king or queen, they have to have a kind of pool to choose from.

“For example, Prince Charles, if and when he becomes king, would be – people assume he would be Charles III. But he could technically be George VII because George is in his name.”

Many speculated King Charles wanted to reign as King George VII in tribute to his grandfather, the late Queen Elizabeth II father, King George VI.

King Charles III held the Prince of Wales title prior to his mother’s death and was previously known in Scotland as the Duke of Rothesay.

He gave a statement to the public not long after his mother’s death.

“The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother,” he continued. “I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”
