Thousands are crowded out the front of Buckingham palace and the royal baby hashtag is trending as the third in line to the throne is born.
The statement placed on an easel at the front of Buckingham palace confirmed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have welcomed their first child, a baby boy weighing 8lb 6oz, into the world at 4.24pm London time.
The twittersphere is rolling with tweets of congratulations and the online world can sign a Google+ card for the Prince of Cambridge.
Clarence House tweeted the link to card with the question “Want to send your congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses?”
Public figures, Presidents and Prime Ministers have tweeted their congratulations publicly to the couple.
“I’m delighted for the Duke and Duchess now their son has been born. The whole country will celebrate. They’ll make wonderful parents”, tweeted David Cameron.
“So pleased to congratulate The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the joyous occasion of the birth of their first child”, tweeted President Obama.
“Wonderful news. A happy day for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and all Australians share their joy #royalbaby”, tweeted Australia’s Opposition leader, Tony Abbott.
Australia’s Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd and the Governor-General have made official public statements.
“On behalf of all Australians, I send heartfelt congratulations to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on this joyful occasion.
“The birth of a baby is an experience to celebrate and cherish. We wish the new parents every happiness and send warm greetings of welcome to the little Prince,” the Governor-General said.
“On behalf of all Australians, Therese and I extend our warmest regards to the new parents, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge”, said the Prime Minister.
“We share in the joy of the royal family, particularly Prince Charles on the birth of his grandson and Queen Elizabeth II on the birth of her great-grandchild.
“This is a happy day for our close friends in Britain and the Commonwealth.”
Crowds of reporters and onlookers continue to hover around St Mary’s hospital and Buckingham Palace while an animated stork is flying around London’s iconic BT tower with the rolling headline, ‘It’s a boy’.
