Royal baby named George Alexander Louis of Cambridge

The famously modern Wills and Kate have stuck with tradition by choosing a name for their new son with strong royal connotations.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis,” a statement from Kensington Palace said.

“The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.” George had been the bookmaker’s favourite since Catherine’s pregnancy was announced last year.

“George was a bit of a giveaway – it was bandied around so much and we expected it,” said Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine.

“And it is a nice tribute to the Queen’s father and grandfather.”

There have been six King Georges, including the Queen’s father, George VI. The new prince’s second name, Alexander, is thought to have been picked to honour the Queen, whose middle name is Alexandra.

The name Louis also has great meaning to William’s father, Prince Charles, whose uncle and mentor, Earl Louis Mountbatten, was assassinated by the IRA in 1979.

But some royal insiders claim that William and Catherine did not choose the names for any particular significance, insisting they “just liked the sound of them”.
