The REAL reason Harry and Meghan stepped down as royals

And no, it wasn't for ''privacy.''

Since the first three episodes of the long-awaited Harry & Meghan docuseries dropped, royal fans and naysayers alike have voiced their confusion as to why the couple had signed on for the series after leaving the royal family due to ‘privacy concerns’.

Since stepping down from their official duties as members of the royal family on January 8th, 2020 – also dubbed ‘Megxit’ – the polarising pair have done anything but stay out of the public eye, notably taking part in an explosive tell all interview with Oprah Winfrey about their decision to leave their royal titles in the dust.

On the back of that, the announcement of Prince Harry’s memoir ‘Spare‘ and this six-part Netflix docuseries (that reports suggest the couple received a $100m USD payday for), have continued to fuel public frustration as critics question their genuine desire to remove themselves from public life.

The news of their departure from the royal family came as a shock to the world.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex however have been quick to counter claims that the Netflix special was a ‘money grab’ as some royal commentators have suggested, their Global Press Secretary Ashley Hansen releasing a statement on their behalf in the hours after the docuseries premiered.

”The Duke and Duchess have never cited privacy as the reason for stepping back,” the statement reads.

”This distorted narrative was intended to trap the couple into silence.

”In fact, their statement announcing their decision to step back mentions nothing of privacy and reiterates their desire to continue their roles and public duties. Any suggestions otherwise speak to a key point of this series.

”They are choosing to share their story, on their terms, and yet the tabloid media has created an entirely untrue narrative that permeates press coverage and public opinion. The facts are right in front of them.”

Queen Elizabeth shared her public support for the couple amidst ‘Megxit’.

At the time of ‘Megxit’, Her Majesty the Queen shared a message from the heart, noting the unprecedented challenges and scrutiny the couple had experienced across their courtship.

”Harry, Meghan and Archie will always be much-loved members of my family.

”I recognise the challenges they have experienced as a result of intense scrutiny over the last two years and support their wish for a more independent life.

The statement then continued to note that the ”whole [royal] family” would support the couple build a happy and peaceful life.

Despite this, times and relationships have been tense. And we doubt things will get any easier anytime soon!
