Though Princess Diana and the now-King Charles divorced in 1996, in the earlier years of their relationship they truly did love each other.

The late Princess of Wales reportedly wished the public could see the love letters she was sent by Charles, so that people would know their relationship had been genuine.

Royal biographer Ingrid Seward has claimed that just weeks before Diana passed away, she told her that “she wished people could see the love letters that she had from Charles.”

“She really wanted people to know that she loved Charles and he loved her. And I always remembered that. And she wanted the boys [Prince William and Prince Harry] to know that,” Ingrid said at an Oldie magazine lunch, according to The Times. “There was a period of great love between them.”

It’s unknown when Diana received the aforementioned love letters from her then-husband, but it’s alluded that they were sent during the early years of their romance.

The couple were married in 1981 following a very brief courtship, and then went on to welcome Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry in 1984.

Though she was in a relationship with Dodi Fayed at the time she shared this information, Ingrid claimed that the Princess wanted “the early days of her romance with the heir to the throne to be properly reflected.”

Princess Diana also reportedly told royal journalist and author of Diana: Her True Story, Andrew Morton, that she and Charles “were very, very close to each other the six weeks before Harry was born, the closest we’ve ever, ever been and ever will be.”

Their marriage subsequently broke down over the next few years, with Princess Diana famously saying, “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” in reference to the now-Queen Camilla, in a 1995 interview with BBC’s Panorama.

It is currently unknown where the alleged love letters are, or if they even still exist.

Interest in Diana’s life remains extremely high, even 27 years following her tragic death, and the “People’s Princess” has had many of her private notes unveiled over the years, particularly from her former butler Paul Burrell.

Some of the letters she sent to friends during her divorce sold at auction last year for more than $250,000 AUD.
