Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish are said to have a ‘paternal and protective’ friendship with the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry.
Whilst some royal watchers and fans of the world-renowned singer/songwriter know that Elton performed at the 2018 wedding of Harry and Meghan Markle, many may not realise the true extent and depth of their bond.
In a witness statement at the March 2023, trial against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), David took to the stand and described the relationship he and his husband have shared with Harry.
All three are seeking damages against the defendant who has been alleged to have carried out or commissioned illegal or unlawful information gathering (mainly through the hacking of mobile phones) in the early to mid-2000’s.
”Our friendship with Prince Harry is very close and, just as it is with Elizabeth (Hurley), paternal and protective,” the statement began.
”Elton and I were great friends with his mother, who we loved dearly, and when she passed, we wanted to do everything we could to give him safety and security, a space of confidence and protection.
”It has deeply upset Elton and I that our intentions were used against us and that the confidence and trust Harry placed in us was exploited and abused by The Mail’s callous activities,” he added.
Sir Elton then said in a witness statement of his own that the ”love, connection, trust and bonds” between himself, David and Harry had been ”exploited” by the Daily Mail.
So close is the bond between the I”m Still Standing’ singer and Harry, that alongside his wife Meghan, the pair consulted Elton on their departure from the royal family prior to the news becoming public.
According to The Mirror, Elton is said to speak with Harry and Meghan ”every day” and is almost a ”parental figure” to them both.
The source also added that John ”is a constant support, especially to Meghan, and is very protective of both of them.”
Elton himself has even previously taken to his personal Twitter account, writing that he felt a ”profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death.”
Harry has also spoken openly at his fondness for the 74-year-old, writing in his memoir Spare that he ”loved him.”
”I’ll always love him.”
Whilst Elton is said to be ”just as close” to the heir to the throne Prince William, reports have suggested he is considerably closer with the embattled Duke and Duchess.
In a clip ahead of the ‘Rocket Man’s’ retirement, Harry said: ”Thank you for being the friend that you were to my mum. Thank you for being our friend, thank you for being a friend to our kids…we love you.”
