Prince George of Cambridge: Kate and William announce royal baby name

Two days after the arrival of the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the final chapter in the waiting game for the royal baby is over.

Kensington Palace have announced Kate and William have chose to name their son George Alexander Louis.

“The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their son George Alexander Louis,” the palace said in a statement.

“The baby will be known as His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge.”

Up until the announcement which came at 6:30pm — 3:30 in the morning Australian time — the third-in-line to the throne was known as Baby Cambridge.

It is thought the Queen would have been informed of, and approved, the name when she was introduced to her third great-grandchild on a visit to Kensington Palace on Wednesday morning.

But a spokesperson from the palace has said the choice of name was the one the couple wanted.

The Queen has been honoured in their heir’s name — his middle name Alexander is a variation on hers, Alexandra.

George pays tribute to the Queen’s father, King George VI, and grandfather George V.

Prince Philip’s side of the family is recognised in the royal baby’s name.

Louis (pronounced Lew-ie) was the name of Prince Philip’s uncle Lord Mountbatten, who Prince Charles was very close to. It is also one of Prince William’s middle names.

While the baby will be known as Prince George, that doesn’t necessarily mean the monarchy will see another King George.

Like the Queen’s father, who was christened Albert but changed his title to George when he begun his reign, the heir may choose to be called by another name when he eventually rises to the throne.

Boy George, as the two-day-old Prince has already become affectionately nicknamed, was given three names rather than the traditional four.

His father Prince William was christened William Arthur Philip Louis.

George was the favourite among bookmakers, with one major betting agency set to pay out the equivalent of $250,000 to those who put money on the name.

Prince George is enjoying “private, quiet time” with his parents and grandparents at the Middleton’s family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire, as the world continues to celebrate his arrival.
