Ahead of Prince Charles and Camilla’s visit to Ireland, shocking details have emerged over plots to kill the Prince of Wales and his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall.
The Irish Daily Mirror have reported that the six men, aged between 21 to 62, are linked to a stash of bombs and guns, all found close to where the royals are due to visit within the week.
It is believed the suspects have close links to both the Continuity and Real IRA.
They were arrested in Co Louth, Dromiskin and Wexford and are being detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
At this point, the men are being questioned on suspicion of “directing terrorism, membership of an unlawful organisation and possession of explosives.”
Prince Charles and Camilla intend to visit the country to pay their respects to Charles’ great uncle Lord Mountbatten, who was killed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) after they placed a bomb on his fishing boat in 1979.
A source revealed to the newspaper that high security had already been implemented due to fears ahead of the royal visit.
“Gardai [Irish Police] have been monitoring a number of people over the past few months,” the source revealed to the Irish paper.
Adding: “Ever since it was announced that the British would be coming over, there has been an increase in security. Nothing is being left to chance. There were two improvised viable devices in the car as well as a handgun.”
“A similar thing can be said for Wexford. The bomb squad were down there dealing with something similar.”
The Gardai police have confirmed the arrest of two men in relation to the crime.
“Two males in their 20s were arrested at the scene and are currently detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Manorhamilton Garda Station,” a Garda spokesman said.
