The Duchess of Cambridge is under fire for failing to attend an annual St Patrick’s Day ceremony to honour the Irish Guards because she wanted to spend time with her children instead.
Kate has presented shamrocks to the soldiers every year for the past four years, but this year left husband William to attend on his own so she could return to Norfolk and George and Charlotte.
It seems like a reasonable thing for a young mother to do – especially one whose youngest child is just 10 months old – but it has infuriated the British press, with the Daily Mail leading the charge against Kate, claiming she is “in danger of failing in her duty”.
“The Duchess’s advisers should have stopped to think how pitiful an excuse it looked to soldiers who have been divided from their families for months on operational tours since British Forces became engaged in the War on Terror in 2003. But they clearly did not,” the piece read.
“William with Kate, the first girl with true working-class roots to marry a future king, should be the couple most capable of bringing the Monarchy closer to the people.
“That’s going to involve some degree of personal sacrifice from them. But a few hours of Kate’s time to present shamrocks is just a small one compared to the ultimate sacrifice which remains a reality for the military men she let down on St Patrick’s Day.”
A member of the royal family has presented Irish Guards with shamrocks to mark St Patrick’s Day every year for the past 115 years.
