‘Hideous’ new Queen portrait unveiled

'Hideous' new Queen portrait declared a 'disaster'

The latest portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.

A new portrait of Queen Elizabeth has been branded a “hideous cartoon” by art critics.

The expressionist-style painting by Daniel Llywelyn Hall — who at 32 is the youngest person ever to paint the Queen — was unveiled at the Millennium Stadium in Wales yesterday.

It has been widely condemned by critics, with Steve Beauchamp declaring it a “disaster” while Martine Thomas said: “The Queen can’t be happy with that — it is shocking.”

David Frazier added: “I’ve never seen a royal portrait like that. It is a shocking portrayal — she looks like a caricature.”

Hall produced the painting after a sitting with the Queen at Windsor Castle late last year.

It was commissioned to mark the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s coronation, which took place on June 3, 1953.

It is the 133rd official portrait of the monarch.

The painting comes just months after the Duchess of Cambridge’s first official portrait met with similarly dire reviews.
