Generals fired over Prince Harry kidnap attempt

Harry will see out his four month tour of Afghanistan despite threats and attacks

Two US generals have lost their jobs over a Taliban attempt to kidnap Prince Harry while he was serving in Afghanistan last year.

Major General Charles M Gurganus and Major General Gregg A Sturdevant were in charge of Camp Bastion in September 2012 when the Taliban launched a raid, forcing the emergency evacuation of Harry, who was serving a three-month tour of duty in the war-torn country.

A suicide bomber and around 20 armed Taliban fighters attacked the base with guns, grenade, rockets and mortars with the aim of kidnapping and killing the prince.

British and US soldiers joined the battle, which quickly became a full blown ground assault, claiming the lives of two United States Marine soldiers and destroying or damaging up to eight aircraft.

Last month GQ magazine reported the total cost to the US military, including the evacuation of Harry, was $200 million.

General Gurganus and Genderl Sturdevant were deemed responsible for Camp Bastion’s security during the raid and asked to retire their positions for failing to “take adequate force protection measures” and not exercising the “level of judgement expected of general officers”.
