Prince William and Kate only announced their pregnancy a few hours ago, but speculation about what they will name their new arrival is already rife.
Elizabeth — the name of William’s grandmother the Queen — is the current bookies favourite, with British betting agency Ladbrokes offering 8/1 odds the baby will share the monarch’s moniker.
Diana — William’s late mother’s name — is the second-favourite option for a baby girl, at 12/1.
If the baby is a boy, the most likely names are Frances (10/1), John (10/1) and Charles (10/1), the name of William’s father.
William and Kate are expected to stick with royal tradition, which sees babies being given traditional names, usually with some historical royal significance.
This will be particularly important as the baby will be third in line to the throne and must have a name befitting its regal status.
The couple are also likely to choose a name with connections to Wales, where they currently live, Cambridge, their namesake city, or Scotland, where they met at University.
