According to royal watchers attending the event, the VIP group were seen laughing together just before singer James Blunt took the stage.

Blunt had the crowd in a fit of laughter when he was cheeky enough to dedicate his hit Your Beautiful to the Prince saying: “This song is for someone very special who organised this event – Prince Harry, I dedicate this to you.”

An amused Prince Harry was delighted with the gaff and laughed along with the audience.

The inaugural Invictus Games, which has seen more than 400 wounded military personnel from 13 nations compete in various Paralympic-style sporting events, celebrated its closing ceremony on Sunday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 26,000.

In a statement read out by Prince Harry the Queen told competitors she was “deeply moved” by the “courage, determination and talent” they had shown.

Prince Harry told the crowd the tournament had shown “the very best of the human spirit”.

“These games have been about seeing guys sprinting for the finish line and then turning round to clap the last man in,” said Harry.

“They have been about team-mates choosing to cross the line together, not wanting to come second, but not wanting the other guys to either.”

Meanwhile British Prime Minister David Cameron suggested the games could become a permanent fixture.

“What’s exciting is that other countries are now coming forward and saying, ‘We would like to host an Invictus Games as well,'” the PM told Forces TV.

“And I think there’s every chance that this can become a real institution and a huge achievement for Prince Harry,” said Cameron.
