Charlotte’s christening countdown! Who will be crowned godparent?

And who will be snubbed?

With Princess Charlotte’s big day right around the corner (Sunday! Mark your calenders), royal watchers like us are eagerly anticipating all the details of the day.

What will Kate wear? Will we get to see little George holding his tiny sister? Will Kate and Wills add another sweet nod to Diana in their ceremony? And who will Kate and Wills chose to be Princess Charlotte’s godparents?

Godparents to royals are, as you can imagine, mostly similar to godparents of non-royals. Their role will include spoiling said godchild at visits, lavishing gifts upon them at birthdays, Christmases and Easters, and siding with them when they grow up to be rebellious teenagers.

Typically, children of royal birth are given eight godparents, of both familial and royal significance. But we all know Kate and Will are prone to breaking royal traditions in an effort to give their children are more “normal” life, which was evidenced by their choice in Prince George’s godparents which included their close friends and family over faraway Princes and Princesses.

Prince George’s godparents include Kate and Will’s college roomie, Oliver Baker, Kate’s schoolfriend, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, family friend, Hugh Grosvenor, Will’s former private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Grandma Diana’s close friend, Julia Samuel, Will’s childhood friend, William van Cutsem and Princess-without-the-title and the only royal family member, Zara Tindall.

Going off George’s selection, we think it’s pretty safe to assume that Charlotte will be getting a similar mix.

But just who will get the honour?

She was passed over for her nephew, Prince George, but many are hoping that aunt Pippa Middleton will get a look in for Charlotte. After all, there is speculation that Charlotte was named for Pippa’s middle name.

Or maybe it’ll be uncle James? The rebellious Englishman is known for being a bit naughty, but is close to sister, Kate.

Or maybe an uncle from the other side! Harry might be out of town on Charlotte’s big day, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be there in spirit. Is Prince Harry in for godfather?

Many are rooting for a royal presence in Princess Beatrice. The Princess of York could be handy in showing young Charlotte the Princess-ly ropes.

Or maybe they’ll go with younger sister, Princess Eugenie. She lives in New York, wears sneakers and hoodies and could very well fill in as the “Cool Godmother”.

Kate and Wills have kept Diana so close to Charlotte in both her name (Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana) and her christening location (the same as Diana’s in 1961), that some are predicting there will be a Spencer influence in her godparents, as well. Perhaps it will be Diana’s mother, Frances Shand-Kydd?

Or perhaps it will be Diana’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes who carries Diana’s torch?

Or her other sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale?

Kate and Wills’ did seek a little name inspiration from uncle Charles Spencer, Diana’s brother, maybe he’ll be in line for the role?

Another family choice might be Laura Lopes, daughter of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

We know Charlotte will be getting some of Kate and Wills’ closest friends, but which ones? Hugh van Cutsem and his wife Rose van Cutsem’s daughter, Grace, was a bridesmaid at the royal wedding in 2011.

So, Hugh van Cutsem’s daughter served at their wedding, and William is George’s godfather. Perhaps it’s time the third brother, Edward van Cutsem got something?

Both William and Harry are reportedly still very close to their former nanny, Tiggy Pettifer. Harry and William are the godfathers to her two sons, Fred and Tom. Perhaps it is time to return the favour?

Kate’s childhood friend, Alicia Fox-Pitt, is also an option. Many were surprised when she was not chosen for George.

Partyboy, Guy Pelly, is a universal royal friend (see: Princess Beatrice, Prince Harry, Prince William and Princess Eugenie). He famously organised Will’s stag party in 2011.

We can see the love here! Thomas van Straubenzee is one of William’s closest friends, and was a honoured guest at their wedding.
