While Charles is technically next in line to the throne, an overwhelming majority of the public would apparently prefer that the Crown skip a generation and go directly to his son, Prince William, according to a poll run by the UK’s Daily Mirror.
The poll indicates that 58% of respondents overall would prefer that Wills, 32, take the throne, with a massive 65% of 18-34 year olds preferring that Charles step aside for their fellow Gen-Yer Wills to take over from Charles.
This preference may not be too far from the truth either, as recently it seems that the Duke of Cambridge had officially commenced training alongside the Queen to learn the ropes for his future role as the King of England.
William recently shadowed Her Majesty the Queen for a day as she undertook diplomatic meet-and-greets at the palace with several ambassadors around the world.
Although the Prince’s appearance at the meeting is reportedly not necessarily an indication that he will start performing the role any time soon, the fact that he joined his grandmother is indicative that Her Majesty is beginning to hand over more responsibility to the next in line to the throne.
Despite the public’s preference for William, royal tradition dictates that it would be highly unlikely for the throne to skip a generation. The last time something similar happened was when Edward VIII abdicated his throne, leading to a major crisis for the royal family.
Steps may already be underway for Charles to take over. Early last year Prince Charles’s staff began to merge with staff at Buckingham palace, with his aide becoming the media chief for the entire Royal household.
William meanwhile is busy counting down to the birth date of his second child with Duchess Catherine, who will overtake his younger brother Harry as fourth in line to the throne.
