The Duke of Cambridge is being heralded a hero online today after footage and photos of him helping an elderly gentleman to his feet have spread across the internet.
Jonathan Douglas-Hughes, The Vice Lord-Lieutenant of Essex, took a tumble while welcoming William and Catherine during a visit to a school in Harlow, and William was quick to jump to the rescue, like the total gentleman he is.
Mr Douglas-Hughes reportedly turned to William and said “sorry about that”, to which he replied” no, it’s all right,” as he helped him to his feet.
He then turned to shake Catherine’s hand, who brightened up the grey-looking day in a pretty $3,000 blue dress by Altuzarra.
William and Kate were visiting Stewards Academy School yesterday as part of their mental health campaign, Heads Together. There to address and discuss how young people cope with stressful issues like starting a new school, they chatted to students and teachers in the classroom.
“Having met Catherine on a couple of occasions, she’s so knowledgeable about mental health and they are really passionate. I just think it’s marvellous what they are doing,” Dr Fiona Pienaar, Director of Clinical Services at children’s charity Place2Be told HELLO.
“I have been in situations where she’s in a small group asking questions and it’s clear that she understands the impact of mental health and early intervention so that you don’t get to a stage where young people need more specialised support and they are having mental ill health,” she added.
“The other thing she does really well and I think they both do – you could see it on the stage – how they talk to young people and they share their experiences and I think that that shows how they really connect with young people. I imagine having their own children has also brought issues to the fore for them.”
William penned a blog post ahead of their visit, citing their children, George and Charlotte, as part of the reason for their tireless campaigning.
“The truth is, for many young people, changing schools or starting a new academic year is really difficult to deal with,” he wrote.
“Catherine and I have young children who will be going through this themselves in a short period of time, and like all parents we will want to make sure that our children are not just able to achieve their academic potential at school but are also happy and emotionally supported.”
He went on to emphasise the importance of children being emotionally supported at school, and the fact that they should never feel ashamed to ask for help.
“What Stewards Academy practises is the belief that children should be comfortable with admitting if they ever feel overwhelmed (it is very normal to feel like that, after all) and that children should know that they can ask for help,” he said.
“The sooner children learn in life that asking for help is okay, the better. It better equips us for adulthood – just as much as good academic results.”
