About 150 people in the remote town pressed up against the airport’s fence to get a look at the royal couple, who touched down just after 1pm local time.

Wearing another number by Roksanda Ilincic for her first trip to Central Australia, the Duchess looked stunning in a sleeveless mauve dress and nude pumps, while Prince William opted for chino pants and a short-sleeved khaki shirt.

The royal couple were met by the Administrator of the Northern Territory, Sally Thomas and Mr Duncan McNeill; Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Adam Giles and Tamara Giles; along with traditional owners Vincent Nipper and Daisy Walkabout.

Ms Walkabout, who greeted Prince Charles and Diana on their trip to Uluru in 1983, spoke to the Duke.

“We’re happy to meet them, like we were happy to meet (Charles and Diana) in the past,” Ms Walkabout said.

“They’ve travelled a lot and now they will come to see this country, and it will be good to know they have seen Uluru, which is so hugely significant not just for a small group of people but a whole range of people that are related and connected to this place.”

The royals will head to the National Indigenous Training Academy to present graduation certificates to students, before being welcomed to the country at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre. An afternoon tea hosted by Mr Giles will follow, before the couple walk at the base of Uluru.
