Whenever a royal baby is born, you can bet the world sits up with interest.

Of course, the British royals are our most familiar clan of regal offspring, but in the mainland of Europe, there’s a whole other world of international royal family members – and one of its folds just got a little bigger.

Former Prince Nicholas of Romania and his wife Alina-Maria welcomed a little baby girl on Saturday, November 7.

The happy news was confirmed by the new father himself, sharing a statement on Instagram and writing: “It gives me great pleasure to announce the birth of my daughter, Maria Alexandra.”

“Alina-Marina and our daughter are both well and healthy.”

The Prince, who is a distant relative to The Queen, added his admiration for those that had supported the couple in welcoming their new child.

“This is a very special moment for our family and we are grateful for the support and shared excitement of Romanians, but especially the efforts of the medical staff during these challenging times.”

The former Prince could barely contain his excitement for his impending arrival.

In September, he shared a gorgeous set of images of himself and his wife posing in a beautiful garden as she cradled her baby bump.

“Mai e puțin până suntem 3!” The royal wrote, which roughly translates to: “We’re almost 3!”

The royal and his wife were ecstatic about becoming parents.

The Romanian royals are no longer working in official roles – Crown Princess Margareta was formerly the Head of the House of Romania, but given she has no children, her younger sister Princess Elena is her heir.

Elena is Nicholas’ mother, which makes him third in line to the now defunct throne, and therefore his new baby daughter was fourth in line.

It will be interesting to see baby Maria Alexandra grow up away from the strict regulations bestowed upon official royal family members – perhaps the family can mirror Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s route.

Whatever comes next, there’s no denying it’s exciting for the new parents. Congratulations to them both!
