Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are engaged and the world can finally sit back from the edge of their seats — well, not all the way… there’s still a royal wedding headed our way!

But before we get too excited about wedding dresses, flower girls and ring bearers — we’re looking at you George and Charlotte — details from the romantic proposal are beginning to trickle out.

According to People, Harry asked Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland for permission before popping the question.

The bride-to-be has previously described her mum as her “best friend,” so it’s no surprise that Harry would seek out her blessing — a beautiful gesture of respect and admiration.

“My mom’s a yoga instructor, but she does social work, as well, and she works specifically with the geriatric community. For me to watch this level of lifelong sensitivity to nurturing and caregiving, but at the same time my mom has always been a free spirit,” Meghan said of her mum in an August 2017 article for Glamour,.

She added: “She’s got dreadlocks and a nose ring. She just ran the L.A. Marathon. We can just have so much fun together, and yet, I’ll still find so much solace in her support. That duality coexists the same way it would in a best friend.”

The couple’s engagement was announced on the morning of Monday 27 November.

Shortly after, a statement from Doria and Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle, was shared.

It read: “We are incredibly happy for Meghan and Harry. Our daughter has always been a kind and loving person. To see her union with Harry, who shares the same qualities, is a source of great joy for us as parents.”

“We wish them a lifetime of happiness and are very excited for their future together.”

Prince Harry’s older brother Prince William and his wife Duchess Catherine also released a statement congratulating the happy couple.

“We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together.”

And of course, Prince Harry’s biggest supporters — The Queen and Prince Philip — couldn’t be more thrilled for their grandson.

Their statement read: “The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh are delighted for the couple and wish them every happiness.”

At the couple’s first photocall, Harry said: “‘I knew she was the one from the very first day.”

They’ve been together for 16 months.

Her diamond ring is set on a gold band, and features a diamond from Botswana — a place close to each of their hearts following several trips there as a couple — and two side stones which were taken from Harry’s mother, Diana’s, personal collection.

It’s a ground-breaking moment for the British Royal Family as it marks the first time an American has married into the dynasty since Wallis Simpson controversially wed King Edward VIII in 1937.

But thankfully we’re now living in 2017 and unlike King Edward VIII, who gave up the throne so he could marry the twice-divorced socialite, Prince Harry’s marriage to his new wife, who was previously married to producer Trevor Engelson between 2013, will be celebrated by his loved ones and indeed the world!

We can barely wait for the big day.
