Despite battling a heavy cold which left him hoarse, the affable heir to the throne managed to cram 41 public engagements across six cities and towns into just three-and-a-half days, engaging the locals in plenty of conversation and laughs.

Touring the woodwork department at the centre for applied science and technology at Holland College in Charlottetown, Prince Charles was handed a giant mallet and joked “It’s the Flintstones!” as he posed for the cameras.

The Canadians put on quite a show for the Prince and Duchess, greeting the royals with custom-made cupcakes and fancy dress. A performance by actor Wade Lynch in which he dressed in drag and gave a comic impersonation of Queen Elizabeth II, has been widely criticised but Prince Charles appeared to react diplomatically.

Charles and Camilla were introduced to people dressed as fruits and vegetables at the Military Families Resource Centre in Halifax, where healthy eating is promoted.

Carrot John Marc Morel said to Charles, “I’m all organic you know!”

The couple were shown around the Hector Quay Heritage Centre in Pictou County and chatted with a craftsman carving a wooden ship’s figurehead.
