Australia’s pop princess returned to her breakout role as Charlene Robinson for the 90-minute special episode, which saw the soap come to an end after 37 years.

Reflecting on the finale and all the years of TV leading up to it, Kylie said the show will always hold a special place in her heart.

“Yep, there were tears!” she confessed alongside a collage of photos from her time on the show in the 80s and her finale return.

“Congratulations to the @neighbours team for the heart-warming and celebratory finale. You’ll be in my heart always!!!”

She also tagged co-star Jason Donovan, who played Charlene’s love interest and eventual husband Scott Robinson on the show.

The stars returned to the soap for the finale alongside other returning characters, including Guy Pearce as Mike Young.

But fans were left scratching their heads when Kylie spoke just five words in the episode, some speculating that Neighbours “couldn’t afford” to hire her for a speaking role.

Others suggested the music legend may have been on vocal rest and some joked her silence was because her accent has become “too British” since moving to the UK.

Now showrunner Jason Herbison has told TV Tonight that the real reason is much more heart-warming.

“Our discussions with Jason and Kylie were always about making a small appearance,” he told the outlet.

“They didn’t want to overshadow the current cast or make the finale about them.

“We also filmed their scenes before I’d written the episode, so whatever we filmed had to fit in with that.”

Fans picked up on that detail, as Kylie and Jason only appeared on-screen with a handful of other characters, including Guy Pearce.

Their scenes were also noticeably shot away from the main Ramsay Street party at the end of the episode, with Jason and Kylie appearing on a balcony nearby.

Neighbours boss Jason added: “I hate to see Kylie copping any criticism – she was nothing short of amazing on the day.”
