From shaved heads, to dramatic weight losses, to pierced eyebrows! Celebs have to go through a lot to transform themselves from the glamazons you see strutting the carpets to the characters you see in films.
But luckily for these hard-working actors, the commitment usually pays off.
Just ask Charlize Theron, who won an Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for playing a serial killer in Monster.
Or ask Anne Hathaway, who got her statue after shaving her head and losing more than 10 kilos for her role in Les Mis!
“I just had to stop eating,” Anne explained of her shocking weight loss, “all for a total of 13 days’ shooting.”
In honour of these celebs’ acting chops, we’ve compiled the most dramatic and shocking movie transformations!
Check them out here.
To take on the role of Aileen Wuornos in Monster, usually-svelte Charliza Theron added 14kgs to her petite frame – and then shaved her eyebrows! But apparently Charlize didn’t have a problem putting on the weight, “I first began stuffing myself with Krispy Kreme doughnuts, but after a while I got sick of them. I love potato chips, so that was a good thing for me. I’m a salty girl so I had my secret stash with me of potato chips at all times.”
Natalie Portman sacrificed her lucious locks to play Evey in V for Vendetta. The actress had her hair shaved in one take for the film.
Cate Blanchett shaved her head for 2002’s Heaven – and she loved it! “Shaving off my hair is so liberating,” she said, “At school it was probably to rebel, but I cut my hair short a few years ago and I’m thinking about doing it again.”
Charlize is all about commitment! The actress shaved her head to play Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road.
Anne Hathaway also got the clippers out for her role as factory-worker-turned-prostitute, Fantine, in Les Miserables. She also dropped 10 kilos!
Miss Zellweger did the opposite! To play the hilarious Bridget Jones in Bridget Jones’ Diary, Renee Zellweger gained 13 kilos by eating 12 courses of “fatty foods” every day, including toast with butter and cream cheese, french toast with syrup, curries, fish and chips, and steak!
Vin Diesel, who usually sports rock hard abs, appeared recently looking curiously plump. The actor is currently filming.
Jared Leto nevers wants to gain weight again after his 30 kilo weight gain to play John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman. Jared revealed he ate “pizza, pasta and chocolate ice cream” and “soy sauce and olive oil poured onto ice cream”! Yuck.
Michael Fassbender went the extra mile to play hunger strike activist, Bobby Sands, by eating “nuts and sardines” for weeks.
Chris Pratt also slimmed down for a role – in a good way! The lovable chubby comedian bulked up to take on the role of Starlord in the blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy. It proved to be a good move for Pratt who has since picked up a string of high profile roles.
Rapper 50 Cent dropped some weight for a role, too! The rapper dropped 25 kilos on a “liquid diet” to play a cancer patient in Things Fall Apart.
But that’s nothing compared to Christian Bale! The actor lost more than 27 kilos by going on a soup diet for The Machinist.
Rooney Mara underwent a dramatic transformation to play the dark Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Instead of going fake, Rooney committed to shaving her head, bleaching her eyebrows and got 12 REAL piercings for the role, including ears, nose, lip and nipple.
The usually androgynous Tilda Swinton changed things up for Trainwreck – in a big way. The actress wore a wig, got a tan and sported some serious eyeliner. We didn’t recognise her!
