Elle Woods is back! Reese Witherspoon just confirmed that Legally Blonde 3 is officially happening in the most glorious way.
Rumours were rife that the film series would return, thanks to E! News. The publication recently reported that the 42-year-old actress was “in negotiations” with MGM to produce and star in Legally Blonde 3.
Our favourite Gemini-vegetarian has confirmed the news herself, by recreating one of the film’s funniest scenes.
Fans will remember Elle’s Harvard submissions ‘essay’ – a video about how she uses legal jargon in her everyday life and champions luxury toilet paper in her sorority? Well, in one clip, the law-school applicant floated on a lilo in a pool, wearing a sparkling pink bikini.
To celebrate the third instalment of the franchise, Reese popped on the same bikini and ‘recreated’ the scene for an instantly-iconic video.
She shared the clip on Instagram and Twitter with a simple, yet telling, caption.
“It’s true,” she wrote. “#LegallyBlonde3.”
Fans have quickly expressed their excitement, with the Instagram video scoring over 700,000 likes in just 10 hours.
We regular folk aren’t the only ones thrilled by the news, however, with stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Selma Blair, Karlie Kloss, Gina Rodriguez and Ava Duverney commenting on the post.
MGM also shared the news on Twitter, revealing we can expect to see the film hit our screens on Valentine’s Day in 2020. In case you’re wondering, that’s 17 years after the Legally Blonde sequel premiered.
For those who need refreshing, Legally Blonde followed sorority gal Elle Woods as she navigated Harvard Law School in an attempt to win back her ex-boyfriend, Warner (Matthew Davis).
Over time, she realised he was – for lack of a better word – trash! She focused all of her energy in to becoming a bad-ass lawyer instead, and nabbed another boyfriend, Emmett (Luke Wilson), in the process.
Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde followed Elle as she made her way to Washington D.C. to work on Bruiser’s Bill. The bill was inspired by her chihuahua’s mother, who was being used for cosmetics testing. She successfully passed the bill to prevent animal testing, because she is ELLE WOODS: a woman who gets things done.
She also married Emmett, and hinted at running for President in the final scene. It wasn’t the greatest sequel of all time, but watching Reese Witherspoon on-screen should always be considered a win.
Who knows what the new film has in store for us; Will Elle be President of the United States? Will she still be with Emmett? Will Jennifer Coolidge reprise her hilarious role as Paulette?
There are many questions yet to be answered, but, one thing’s for sure, we are STOKED by this announcement.
