Did someone say Oscar nomination? Because we really think this could be Margot Robbie’s time.
The trailer just dropped for the highly-anticipate I, Tonya, in which Margot Robbie plays the eponymous figure skater, Tonya Harding.
The movie follows the crazy events leading up to the attack on Harding’s skating rival, Nancy Kerrigan, ahead of the 1994 Winter Olympics.
One month before the games, Kerrigan was attacked by thugs hired by Tonya’s then-husband, Jeff Gillooly, to break her leg at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit.
The attack led to no broken bones, but the severe bruising caused her to withdraw from the competition.
Tonya went on to win first place.
Six weeks later, with a strong knee and even stronger drive, Nancy took out the silver medal at the 1994 winter Olympics.
Distracted by the relentless media attention from the ongoing scandal, Tonya finished in eighth place.
As the case unfolded throughout the year, the USFSA (United States Figure Skating Association) stripped the vilified skater of her championship title, and slapped her with a lifetime ban after she pleaded guilty to conspiring to hinder prosecution in the attack.
It was the biggest scandal in figure skating history (to say the least!) and resulted in four men going to prison.
Margot, 27, looks every inch the Olympian as she expertly skates around the rink as Harding in the trailer. Perfecting the Oregon accent, we can already see why there’s Oscar hype surrounding her performance. The film promises scandal, dark humour, jealousy and betrayal – basically sign us up now – we can’t WAIT to see it!
You can catch Margot in I, Tonya in December.
