What do you get when you cross three overworked, underpaid women reporting to a “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot”?
The hilarious 1980 revenge comedy 9 To 5, starring Lily Tomlin, Dolly Parton and Jane Fonda!
Released in 1980, the flick tells a tale of workplace inequality, female relationships and sexual harassment – subject matters that are still just as relevant 40 years later.
“You never know what is going to be a hit – and it was almost like a protest movie,” says Dolly.
“But it did touch a nerve. It did resonate with enough people.”
Did it ever! The movie inspired a spin-off TV series and a Broadway musical that’s coming to Australia in April, and there was even talk of a sequel!
Meanwhile, the careers of Dolly, Jane and Lily have endured, with the cult classic’s badass trio still working hard to make a livin’!
After making her movie debut as Doralee, Dolly had more Hollywood success with movies like The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas and Steel Magnolias. More recently, Netflix’s Dolly’s Heartstrings – which she produced – tells all the stories behind the 74-year-old’s greatest hits.

Since the movie’s release, Lily – who played Violet – and Jane have been inseparable.
In 2015, the besties reunited to star in Netflix’s Grace And Frankie.
Of her 80-year-old BFF, Jane has gushed, “I’ve loved Lily since the moment I saw her.”
Meanwhile, like her character Judy in 9 To 5, Jane has been trying to make a change.
The 82-year-old has been arrested multiple times during recent demonstrations to raise climate change awareness.
“I’m scared to death, but I know that I’m doing what I need to do,” says Jane.
Meanwhile, while Dolly dashed our dreams when she revealed a sequel is on ice indefinitely, we at least have the stage version to look forward to!
Yep, after debuting on Broadway back in 2008, 9 To 5: The Musical – which features the flick’s iconic title song – is finally coming to Australia.
Starring local showbiz legends Caroline O’Connor and Marina Prior, as well as Samantha Dodemaide and Erin Clare, the show commences in Sydney this April before moving to Melbourne.
We’ll see you there!
