Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan gave fans the best kind of surprise this week after revealing they were expecting their second child.
But it seems none were more surprised than the Duke and Duchess themselves, whose reactions to their own news was all the more exciting given what they’d been through less than a year prior.
Indeed, in November last year, Duchess Meghan penned a searing essay for the New York Times about suffering a miscarriage, which occurred in July last year.
In the essay, titled The Losses We Share, the Duchess explained her and her husband’s heartbreak after losing their second child.
“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second,” she explained.
“Hours later, I lay in a hospital bed, holding my husband’s hand. I felt the clamminess of his palm and kissed his knuckles, wet from both our tears.
She continued: “Staring at the cold white walls, my eyes glazed over. I tried to imagine how we’d heal.”
And now, it seems Meghan and Harry were all the more surprised given what they’d been through.
Speaking to PEOPLE, a close source to the couple said the pair were “Hopeful that they would get pregnant again. And they were overjoyed that it happened so quickly.”
And after their devastating miscarriage, “they were both nervous, and it took them a while before they could relax and fully enjoy this pregnancy,” the source added.
Now, as Meghan settles into her prengnacy (with an adorable baby bump to boot), it seems the pair are now more excited than ever.
“They always wanted for Archie to have a sibling close in age,” the source continued to explain.
That much was apparent in Harry and Meghan’s official announcement, which came via their spokesperson this week.
In a statement, they said: “We can confirm that Archie is going to be a big brother. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are overjoyed to be expecting their second child.”
The announcement came with a glorious black and white image of Harry and Meghan in an outdoor grassy area smiling excitedly as Meghan clutched her baby bump.
While Meghan’s due date is not yet known, it is predicted she is around the four or five month mark in her pregnancy.
And going by their cautiousness after Meghan’s previous miscarriage, it is likely they wouldn’t have announced the news until she was well into her second trimester.
That means if Meghan is around the 20-week mark, she has another 20 weeks to go so her rough due date would be around late June or early July 2021.
And no matter when it is, there’s no doubt it will be a glorious time for all.
