Kylie Minogue breaks down as she remembers the ‘trauma’ of her cancer diagnosis and treatment.
During an interview with CBS News’ Seth Doane, the singer opened up about the breast cancer diagnosis she received in 2005.
Kylie revealed she received the diagnosis just days before she was set to perform the Australian leg of her tour ‘Showgirl’.
She immediately postponed the tour to start the treatment process as early as possible.
Her treatment included a lumpectomy and eight months of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
“You have to get on, you have to get on with stuff, but …” Kylie started to cry.
“Is it fear that’s coming through?” Seth Doane asked as she tried her best to speak through her tears.
“It’s trauma. And any trauma resides within you.” Kylie replied.
“The experience of a cancer diagnosis will live in me. It was difficult. It was also amazing.”
She continued to explain, “Amazing in that you are very aware of your body, of the love that’s around you, of your capability, all sorts of things.”
She further explained that her passion has really helped her through the pain and processing her trauma.
“I sing to process everything, I think,” she said.
“I write to process. I perform to process. And sometimes I think I live to perform.”
Despite being declared cancer-free in 2006 the healing did not stop there.
The shocking diagnosis also came with news that would be devastating for a young woman. The cancer meant she would be unable to have children.
In 2019, Kylie mentioned to the Sunday Times that before the diagnosis, having kids wasn’t on her radar. She revealed that the ‘cancer changed everything’.
“I don’t want to dwell on it, obviously, but I wonder what that would have been like,” she said.
“Everyone will say there are options, but I don’t know.”
“I can’t say there are no regrets, so I just have to be as philosophical about it as I can.”
The interview ended with Seth asking how long will she continue performing.
“Ask my knees that have been stomping on stages for years and years and years in stupid high heels!” Kylie replied,
She loves performing and there’s no doubt that she will continue for years to come.
