It has been more than 10 years since the former reigning monarch, the late Queen Elizabeth II has set foot on our soil, but now an “anticipated” royal tour is set to commence.
A member of the British royal family has been said to make an appearance for the Bicentenary of the NSW Legislative Council in October 2024.
In an announcement, the NSW Parliament detailed all the celebratory events planned for the anniversary.
“Two centuries of democracy in Australia is being celebrated with a wide and exciting range of events marking the establishment of the nation’s first parliament, the New South Wales Legislative Council, with a much-anticipated royal visit in 2024 promising to be a highlight,” the statement said.
“It was during the first royal tour to Australia in 1954 that her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II paid a visit to the NSW Parliament and christened it Australia’s ‘Mother Parliament’.”
The tour was originally discussed prior to King Charles’ ascension to the throne with President of the NSW Legislative Council Matthew Mason-Cox.
However, the recent announcement only referred to an “anticipated royal tour” and Buckingham Palace is yet to confirm the visit.
Therefore, it is yet to be confirmed as to whether it will be King Charles and wife Camilla, the Queen Consort attending the anniversary or another member of the royal family.
Prince William and Kate Middleton could also be the attendees after jumping at the opportunity to visit Australia following Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s offer to host the couple and their children.
The Prince and Princess of Wales have not visited Down Under since 2014 after their planned visist in 2020 was cancelled due to COVID-19.
Sources revealed Prince William wants to take his family to some of his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth’s favourite places.
“It’s been a year of upheaval for the children, and the family are looking to make some happy memories and take them on a big adventure,” says a palace insider.
“William and Kate loved their first tour to Australia in 2014.
“William has told [his children] all about the cool animals in Australia.”
