U.S. President Joe Biden has met with King Charles for the first time since the monarch’s coronation.
President Biden met with Charles III on July 10 at Windsor Castle, with the U.S. leader arriving just outside the stately manor via the Marine One helicopter.
The U.S. leader was offered a warm welcome by the new monarch, with his arrival accompanied by a performance of The Star-Spangled Banner by the British military band.
Following Biden’s ceremonious welcome, the two leaders ascended the stairs from the Quadrangle to Windsor Castle to further discuss their new diplomatic relationship.
“[King Charles and President Biden] underscored the strength of the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom and the friendship between our people,” read an official statement from The White House.
The meeting also tackled more global issues, with President Biden and King Charles following their formal introduction with a discussion regarding their commitment to tackling the climate crisis.
According to The White House’s official statement, both President Biden and King Charles “engaged with a group of leading philanthropists and investors focused on mobilizing finance to address the climate crisis,” with the leaders reportedly discussing an increase in finances to assist the world’s poorest countries in the global fight against climate change.
Both King Charles and President Biden have been vocal regarding the severity of the climate crisis, with President Biden previously calling climate change the “worst existential threat to human existence as we know it.”
While the Royal Family are typically expected to remain apolitical in the public eye, King Charles has remained a consistent advocate for the environment for over 50 years.
“We are faced at this moment with the horrifying effects of pollution in all its cancerous forms,” the then-Prince Charles stated in an 1970 address to the Countryside in 1970 convention, with the 22-year-old Prince adding, “conservation or problems about pollution should not be held up as separate concepts from housing or other social schemes.”
President Biden also met with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. The leaders also discussed potential pathways for Ukraine to become a member state of NATO ahead of this week’s NATO summit in Lithuiania.
“We’ve got a lot to talk about. Our relationship is rock solid. Couldn’t be meeting with a closer friend and greater ally,” Biden said ahead of his meeting with Sunak.
