After an agonising 3 days, Kensington Palace announced today that Kate and William, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s daughter will be named Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge.

Princess Charlotte, who was born at 8.34am on May the 2nd, is thought to have been named after Princess Charlotte Augusta of Wales, who was the only daughter of King George IV or Queen Charlotte, who was King George III’s wife. Charlotte is also the middle name of Kate’s only sister, Pippa Middleton. The Princess’ middle names are suspected to be a nod to her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, and Prince William’s mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

Betters hoping for an Alice or an Olivia, were left disappointed when Kate and William decided on the classic Charlotte, a female variation of Prince William’s father’s name, Charles. The royal couple also didn’t disappoint those hoping for a tribute to the People’s Princess, Diana Spencer.

The name was a hot favourite in the betting stakes, with the odds before the birth resting at 3:1. To the delight of thousands of punters, Kate and Will’s chosen name has resulted in a huge pay out for the lucky betters, beating out Alice, Elizabeth, Olivia, Victoria and Alexandra.
