Nick Cave is one of Australia’s most iconic exports from our indie music scene, but he has a surprising connection to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

Rock royalty and royalty aren’t at face value a logical match, however, in 2020 they made perfect sense – and it created one of Kate’s most notable fashion looks.

Nick’s wife, Susie Cave, is a former model who created her own fashion label in 2014, called The Vampire’s Wife, after a book her husband abandoned writing.

When the label officially launched, it quickly caught the eyes of Hollywood elites for its gothic but feminine aesthetic, which Susie crafted to make “things beautiful by making beautiful things.”

But in March 2020, the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out in one of Susie’s creations for the British ambassador Robin Barnett’s reception at the Guinness Storehouse’s Gravity Bar in Ireland, Dublin.

However, this was more than just a pretty outfit valued at £1,595! The metallic emerald midi dress with ruffled quarter length sleeves and hem, pointed shoulder pads, and Susie’s classic mermaid silhouette was a major departure from Kate’s usual attire, and it spoke volumes.

Her matching emerald green pumps were a delightful styling choice.

It was a testament to Kate’s famous ability to follow royal protocols without diminishing her own passions and modern approach to life in the crown.

She also proved just how much of an influence she has on trends because soon after she stepped out in this glittery gown, Hollywood took notice.

The likes of Natalie Portman, Jennifer Aniston,Jodie Comer, and Maggie Gyllenhaal have worn pieces from The Vampire’s Wife since Kate’s moment in Dublin.

In fact, Kate’s cousin-in-law Princess Beatrice wore the same green frock in 2019 and re-wore it for Ellie Goulding’s 2020 wedding.

Born in Cheshire, England, Susie was raised in Africa by her academic father, and she learnt to sew with her grandmother.

However, modelling called her name before she tapped into her inner designer when the legendary Steven Meisel discovered her.

She fatefully met Nick in 1997 backstage at a Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds show through her friend and fashion designer Bella Freud the great-granddaughter of the infamous psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud.
