Itโ€™s not everyday you get nominated for TV WEEK Logie Award.

So when Home and Away star Matt Evans found out he was up for the coveted Graham Kennedy Award for Most Popular New Talent, the entire situation felt โ€œsurrealโ€.

โ€œI honestly didnโ€™t see it coming at all. It was kind of something I always joked about when I first started acting on [Home and Away]. It kind of doesnโ€™t feel real,โ€ he tells TV WEEK.

โ€œI just feel really honoured and Iโ€™m really happy to have been nominated.โ€

Despite gaining a legion of fans for his portrayal of troubled bad boy Theo Poulos, Matt says itโ€™ll be no easy feat winning the Graham Kennedy Award โ€“ and he has a point!

Also vying for the coveted title of most popular new talent is MAFS expert Alessandra Rampolla, The Project co-host Tony Armstrong, comedian Melanie Bracewell, and fellow actors Will Lodder and Carlos Sanson Jr.

โ€œA lot of the people who are nominated look like theyโ€™re going to have great careers. Like Tony Armstrong โ€“ especially with the ABC โ€“ everybody loves him, heโ€™s brilliant,โ€ Matt admits.

โ€œI feel the competition and I feel a slight bit of โ€˜oh wow Iโ€™m in this category and itโ€™s a bit scaryโ€™.โ€

Matt says his Summer Bay co-stars couldnโ€™t be more supportive of his Logie nomination.

The Home and Away cast often refer to each other as family, so itโ€™s no surprise that Matt says he received an outpouring of support from his co stars when news broke of his nomination.

โ€œIโ€™m a class-clown type of person so theyโ€™ve taken the mickey out of me. But itโ€™s all been really positive at the same time,โ€ he says.

โ€œYou kind of have this feeling of โ€˜are people going to think differently of me? Or do they think they should have been nominated?โ€™ but everybody โ€“ even the ones who were up for the same category of award โ€“ were just super supportive, especially the producers of the show.

โ€œIโ€™m taking each day as it comes. Iโ€™m really enjoying acting since Iโ€™ve started it; itโ€™s a new skill that Iโ€™m learning and Iโ€™m really in it for the ride and enjoying it but music at the same time was always my passion,โ€ he says.

โ€œI always wanted to be a musician and a performer, so I think Iโ€™m open to [pursuing] either or.

However, Matt admits heโ€™s not completely sold on the nomadic lifestyle that can come with a music career.

โ€œIโ€™m not really sure how keen I am on the idea of being a touring artist. Iโ€™m really unsure about the whole thing, but I think thereโ€™s kind of a beauty in that where I can just be open minded and take whatever comes my way,โ€ he says.

Matt also gets candid on his apprehension to throw himself wholeheartedly into a music career.

โ€œIt sounds really silly when I say it out loud but I always have this fear of the music industry where I think Iโ€™m getting too old to break through,โ€ he says.

โ€œI know Iโ€™m only 25 but itโ€™s the thing that keeps eating at me in my own head. So I think that might be a fear as to why I kind of push [pursuing music] away.โ€
