With Ziggy and Dean about to welcome their first child into the world, Summer Bay is abuzz this week.
However, in Home And Away, the imminent arrival hits a bump when Dean’s (Patrick O’Connor) mum Karen (Georgia Adamson) invades their nesting time.
Her presence is an immediate red flag for Ziggy (Sophie Dillman), who is already struggling to get her head around the realities of becoming a new mother.
”Dean and Ziggy are starting to realise that they aren’t prepared enough,” Sophie, 30, tells TV WEEK.
”The birth is creeping up on them and they have no idea – then Karen shows up!”
Trying to remain composed, Ziggy looks to Dean to sort things out. But Karen wants to be a helpful grandmother – even if her assistance really isn’t required. But before Dean can remedy the situation, Ziggy goes into labour!
”It [the labour] comes as quite a shock,” Sophie explains.
”In fact, Karen and Dean are arguing at the time when Ziggy interrupts them with the news!”
At the hospital, Ziggy tries to remain calm as Karen waltzes into the birthing suite carrying an esky.
Making herself comfortable, she cracks open a beer and takes a seat.
Ziggy, meanwhile, is doubled over in pain. Dean is caught between the two women: he wants to be a good partner and father but would hate to ruin his mother’s joy at seeing her grandchild born.
”Ziggy is not happy at all,” Sophie says with a laugh.
”Dean is trying to keep Karen at bay and keep Ziggy calm while copping all her abuse – poor Dean!”
Out of desperation, the dad-to-be calls John (Shane Withington) to assist. Karen is hurt and explains why she’s there: she gave birth to Dean alone with no-one there to assist. She won’t let her son go through the same experience; she wants to be there for her grandchild, always.
Back in the birthing suite, Ziggy is petrified, but Dean is on hand to guide her through the final phases of labour.
Despite ”a lot of screaming”, all goes well and the couple finally meet their healthy baby.
They’re parents – yay!
