This week on Home And Away, the locals are still reeling from being held hostage by a vengeful Heather (Sofia Nolan). But with no-one seriously hurt, they’re determined to put the trauma behind them. For Alf (Ray Meagher) and daughter Roo (Georgie Parker), this means making sure Marilyn (Emily Symons) knows they’re on her side.
“Alf’s disappointment in the whole thing was that Marilyn didn’t tell him the truth right from the start,” Ray, 78, tells TV WEEK.
“His confusion was that he couldn’t believe she would be in this sort of situation and not feel able to talk to him about it.
“When the truth comes out, obviously he would forgive Marilyn in a heartbeat. He sees her as another daughter.”
Although her friends do their best to be supportive, it’s not enough for Marilyn who fears they’ll view her differently now. Fearing their judgment, she writes a note and flees Summer Bay.
“It’s devastating for Alf that Marilyn feels so bad about this whole mess that she has to leave the Bay,” Ray says.
“She’s been through hell with this daughter [Heather], and he can’t believe she’s left and
he can no longer help her.”
No matter how hard anyone tries, no-one can track down Marilyn or get in touch. Thankfully, local police officer Cash (Nicholas Cartwright) is on the case. He gets to work, and a few days later has information to share with her worried friends.
But it’s not what they were hoping for.
Marilyn is safe, but has made it clear that she doesn’t want to be found. The news rattles John (Shane Withington) and Irene (Lynne McGranger) and leaves Alf angry with Cash.
“Alf is furious,” Ray explains. “It’s a small town and he knows Cash. Sure, he’s a copper, but he’s also a citizen of the Bay. Why wouldn’t he help these two people get back together? And Alf doesn’t know for sure that Marilyn isn’t in danger.”
As upset as everyone is, Cash stands firm: they have to respect Marilyn’s wishes. Is she lost to the Bay for good?
