The news came to royal correspondents on the scene first by press release, who informed the crowd as the couple’s private press secretary emerged from the private wing where the Prince of Cambridge was born.

“It’s a boy!” was shouted prompting crowds to erupt in celebration.

The crowd of hundreds gathered at St Mary’s hospital in Paddington began to dance and cheer, welcoming the baby boy who was delivered inside the building they surrounded almost five hours earlier.

Well-wishers were heard chanting “we love the prince!”, and “we love Kate”, as camera crews rushed to capture their reactions.

Many royalists made their way to the Lindo Wing particularly for the occasion, but some had been stationed there awaiting the historical moment for a long time.

“I’ve been here for 21 days in hospital and I’ve come out to see this,” Londoner Hani Hussein told The Weekly.

“It’s finally here and it’s a boy, it’s a cute little prince and we’re so happy!”

Royal loyalist Terry Hutt had been camping on a bench outside the Lindo Wing for almost two weeks awaiting the news and said he was “over the moon” to hear of baby Cambridge’s arrival.

“I’m glad the baby’s ok.”

A crowd more than ten deep were gathered outside Buckingham Palace where the official birth notice has been posted by a royal aide on the easel used to announce Prince William’s birth, visible from the palace gates.

The crowd continues to grow at the palace where an impromptu party is anticipated to kick off welcoming the royal arrival.
