Actress Zoe Saldana has revealed her husband has taken her last name as the Dominican-Puerto Rican stars on the cover of US InStyle and speaks out about their marriage for the first time since giving birth.
“I tried to talk him out of it,” Saldana told the magazine.
“I told him, ‘If you use my name, you’re going to be emasculated by your community of artists, by your Latin community of men, by the world.’ But Marco looks up at me and says, ‘Ah, Zoe, I don’t give a s–t’.”
Saldana’s secretly tied the knot with Italian artist – and former professional soccer player – Marco Perego (now Saldana) two years ago.
The couple gave birth to twin boys, Cy Aridio and Bowie Ezio, in November 2014.
Saldana, who made her big screen debut as the rebellious ballerina on Centre Stage, has previously spoken about the solid relationships she has with her two sisters.
Being raised by a strong mother taught her the importance of women’s equality, she’s claimed.
“Only an intelligent person and a very strong person will come into my hub, [my family’s] hub and know how to survive,” Saldana told Amanda de Cadenet on The Conversation.
Speaking to InStyle this month the actress says she’s “been lowering [her] guard” since meeting Marco.
“Finally when we had our boys, I looked at my husband and I realised: I was meant for you and you were meant for me. I’ve always felt comfortable around men as long as they were friends. Now I finally feel comfortable with my lover. I don’t want to be separate. I want my church. I want to live inside the religion of our own little family.”
The July issue of US InStyle is on sale now.
