The sad news has been confirmed by People magazine with a source revealing that the 22-year-old musician contacted his fiancée two weeks ago to end it.
“She’s been putting on a brave face, as Little Mix have had promotion to do, but she’s obviously devastated,” the source told People.
“Perrie’s being supported by her bandmates, but she’s really in pieces about this.”
Zayn popped the question to his girlfriend back in August 2013, breaking the hearts of many Directioners across the world.
The former couple have had a rocky relationship to say the least. In June Zayn was accused of cheating on his fiancée during 1D’s stint in Thailand.
At the time, he denied the rumors, tweeting: “I’m 22 years old… I love a girl named Perrie Edwards. And there’s a lot of jealous f–ks in this world I’m sorry for what it looks like x.”
Perrie is often cited as the Yoko Ono of the British pop group due to her heavy contribution to Zayn’s decision to leave the globe’s biggest boy band.
“He wanted to go and spend some time with his family and missus,” former bandmate Liam Payne said in May.
Meanwhile both Zayn and Perrie are in Los Angeles for work but are yet to cross paths. Perrie is with her band, Little Mix, promoting their latest chart-topper, Black Magic, while Zayn continues to work on his solo album.
Despite the split it seems Perrie is healing her broken heart with her bandmates and soaking up the sunny weather.
The now-single blonde has taken off her diamond engagement ring, as seen in a Monday post on Instagram by fellow Little Mix member Jesy Nelson.
For Zayn, it’s all about a fresh start. An insider told Us Magazine, “He just wanted to move on and start over in all ways.”
And it seems Zayn is finally happy. Taking to twitter in a series of posts last week, he boasted to his fans that he’s finally turning over a new leaf.
“These streets will make you feel brand new,” he tweeted on at the end of July.
Followed by this the next day: “I guess I never explained why I left, it was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who i really am!”
Ending his set of tweets with a snap of himself signing his new record deal with RCA and the hashtag #REALME.
While Zayn’s solo career has kicked off, he still remains incredibly proud of his 1D roots. His ex-band released their new single Drag Me Down and Zayn was quick to congratulate them.
“Proud of my boys the new single is sick. Big love. 🙂 x” he tweeted on 2nd August.
In other big One Direction news, Louis Tomlinson confirmed his impending fatherhood and the 23-year-old is very excited!
During an interview with Good Morning America, in the video player below, host Michael Strahan wished the singer all the best from “one father to another.”
The Brit thanked the co-host and gushed about all that’s happening in his life.
“Obviously it’s a very exciting time, so I’m buzzing,” he said of Briana Jungwirth’s pregnancy.
A source previously told People that Louis is “super excited about it” and that he’ll be a very “hands-on” dad.
