Who is the mystery bare-legged woman in Kabul?

A woman has gone bare-legged whilst walking the streets of conservative Kabul.

The photograph was taken by a local journalist, Hayat Ensafi, who said that this was something that needed to be chronicled.

“I was shocked”, he told the BBC.  “I knew I had to catch this special moment because I never saw a woman here walking down the streets like this.”

The restriction on what women in Kabul can wear is not as strict as what it was under Taliban rule (which ended in 2001), but it is uncommon for a woman to show her legs.

Though, as CNN pointed out, this was not always the case with women in the 60s and 70s wearing everything from midis to maxis and everything in between.

Speculation has been rife on social media – and in the streets of Kabul –  about who the mysterious woman is.

Some have said that she might be mentally ill, however others have theorised that she was making a political statement.

Support on social media for the woman has risen, with people tweeting that it is the woman’s body, and her choice as to what she wears.
