The $47k lunch you won’t believe

How you ever felt guilty for splashing out on an extravagant entrée? Well that will be nothing compared to what some people have forked out for a meal.

Before the internet once again delights in ridiculing Gwyneth Paltrow or another celebrity for their haughty attempt to relate to the unprivileged we’d like to turn its attention to the dinners of snooty New York City eatery, Nello.

A bill circulating online from the restaurant showed one table of six forking out $47221.09 at the trendy Manhattan venue for lunch. Yeah we can hear your audible “What!”

While Gwyn recently came under fire for having bought seven limes (why?!) when she tried to live like a poor person for a week, we think those citrus treats might be easier to justify than the $12 bottle of water, the $14 chunks of parmesan or three bottles of $5000 pinot noir found on the bill of these fine diners.

According to Nello’s owner, Nello Balan, the bill was alleged to have belonged to billionaire and Chelsea Football Club owner, Roman Abramovich who reportedly tipped 20 per cent of his bill – or $7328.20USD.

But Abramovich’s rep told the UK’s Telegraph this receipt does not belong to him.

A spokesman said: “That bill does not belong to them. They spent only a fraction of that amount. Maybe it is someone else’s bill.”

Okay it may not be him but the fact that anyone can rack up that much for lunch is disgustingly impressive.

Other bills found online from the Upper East Side eatery are of the same ilk – people paying hundreds, even thousands, for mostly pasta and wine.

One diner and Yelp commenter who shared a picture of a tasty pasta carbonara summed it up perfectly when they wrote: “Very good restaurant if money isn’t an issue then come…”

So, can someone make a reservation for us the Sunday after we sell our kidneys to pay for the bill? Cheers.
