Even after accepting an Academy Award for playing the most distinguished and respected woman in Britain, Helen Mirren is still proving she isn’t that posh at all.
Appearing on Jimmy Fallon’s The Tonight Show, Ms Mirren – who was made a Dame by the Queen herself – showed off her funny side by conducting the entire interview on helium.
The 69-year-old, who looked trim and gorgeous in a royal purple Escada dress and choker necklace, played along gamely with Jimmy, whilst he asked her questions like where she keeps her Oscar (answer: on the stairs).
Taking the reins, the Dame declared, ‘You have to give me an award, and I’m going to do my acceptance speech’.
And she did.
Accepting a stuffed panda as her trophy, Helen then proceeded recite a gracious speech – all several octaves higher than usual, of course.
“Oh thank you. I’m so honored. This is the most fantastic thing I’ve ever had,” the Dame said, “I want to thank my whole crew and my husband. Darling, I love you very, very much.”
Ending the interview, Jimmy – also on helium – asked Ms Mirren what the English called a dish made with sausages and potatoes. Helen sucked in some helium and gamely shouted, ‘Spotted Dick!’
Well played, Your Majesty, well played.
