The 56-year-old presented his new one-man play Citizen Twain in LA on Thursday and battled through an audience Q&A while dabbing at his mouth with a cloth.

During the event, Val revealed that he had to cancel the play’s tour as his tongue had swollen up.

“I went into rehearsals down in Florida and started having trouble with my speech.”

“Obviously I’m still recovering. My tongue swelled up and I cancelled the tour. As I’m recovering I’m showing this,” he explained through slurred speech.

However he didn’t disclose any further information about his illness.

Despite being poorly, Val still managed to crack jokes and have the audience in fits of laughter.

Earlier in the month, the Batman Begins star shutdown Michael Douglas’ claims he had cancer.

“Val is dealing with exactly what I had and things don’t look too good for him,” Michael alleged at the time. “That’s why you haven’t heart too much from him lately.”

This appeared to fit in with reports surrounding Val’s ill health, when it was reported in 2015 that the Top Gun actor has been hospitalised after he began bleeding from the throat.

“I love Michael Douglas but he is misinformed,” Val said on Facebook.

“The last time I spoke to him was almost two years ago, when I asked him for a referral for a specialist to get a diagnosis for a lump in my throat,” the one-time Batman actor said.

“I ended up using a team at UCLA and have no cancer whatsoever. I still have a swollen tongue and am rehabbing steadily.”
